Feeling like a black and white kind of Monday morning so here’s a little photo dump. Something we love about black-and-white is how it can accentuate the mood and the vibe of any given moment. We also love how we can draw the eyes to the subject and add a cinematic and dramatic feeling to our images, especially our editorial and creative shots.

Lightroom is amazing, but every part of the eco-system has to be at peak performance to get the best out of it and that includes the drive you’re using to run the lightroom catalogue and where all the RAW files are stored.

By no means is the SanDisk a bad option, its small form factor makes it easy to carry around and it’s super light. However it’s not the fastest option on the market for the price anymore. Typically PCIe interface SSD drives, which are designed to be “inside” a computer are the fastest but they are also the most expensive. But with Black Friday deals they are really affordable right now.

So just to be clear, a SanDisk SSD drive is an all in one solution. A case or enclosure with memory inside. You simply attach a USB cable and you’re good to go. Whereas, I’m suggesting you buy a very fast PCIe SSD card, like the Samsung Pro980, and insert it into a enclosure that you buy separately. Together this drive could run 3 times faster than a SanDisk solution.

Here are some specs:

SanDisk says it can run up to 2000MB/second
Samsung says it can run up to 7500MB/second

Depending on your computer and setup you’re going to get a number that will be less than advertised. So while, 2000MB sounds great, the reality is you’re not going to get close to that.

For the USA, the Black Friday deals are amazing and I would jump on this ASAP, for Canadians, the Samsung drive 2TB can be as low as 199 canadian, and the Satechi enclosure around 90. As time goes on these will get cheaper so keep your eyes opened

An engagement party turned into a full on wedding

An engagement party turned into a full on wedding day. We've had to keep these photos on the down low for a few months as our couple surprised their friends and family by turning their engagement party into their wedding day.

We spent the afternoon wandering the historic streets of Vancouver's Chinatown. Playing with light and being creative with what we found, our favourite way to explore an area.

This device, btw NOT a paid advertisement, has saved me hundreds of hours over the last few years editing in Lightroom.

Think about how every time you make adjustments your focus shifts to the toolbars on the left and right hand side of your screen. And each time you make an adjustment you look back at the photo, and then look back at the tool bar to make further adjustments. Now imagine doing that thousands of times per wedding!

Instead, a simple turn of a dial while looking at the image not only keeps your focus on the image, but allows you to be more precise and creative at the same time.

Multi-key shortcuts are great if you have no other choice but the Loupedeck+ has 14 programmable keys so you can choose what you use most often. It comes with a super simple easy to use program, where you just drag the shortcuts you want onto the buttons you want programmed. It makes you feel like a genius but it’s soooo easy to do.

My least favourite thing to do is having to scroll down the toolbar to find things like Colour Mixer, Upright tool etc. When you click or scroll any of the wheels on Loupedeck+ it automatically jumps to that tool in Lightroom, so you don’t even need a mouse to get to the tool you need.

Flash is here to stay, so let’s embrace it.

For these shots here are the settings:
Speed: 1/100 of a second
Aperture: f/1.4 - f/2.8
ISO: 400
Flash settings set to auto

If you can increase the ISO that will lower the amount of flash output you need. In my case there were some near by lights I didn’t want to affect my image, so I didn’t want to increase the ISO too much and have that light cast onto our couple.

Hot tip!! If you have an assistant or partner to help, use a camera flashlight to help illuminate the couple, it’s not bright enough to affect the image, but it will help the camera auto focus when it’s that dark out!
