We can take up to 9000 images on a wedding so anyt We can take up to 9000 images on a wedding so anything to help the culling process is welcome. You know that feeling when you’ve “got” the shot. When it just hits? That’s when you want to push that rate button on the back of your camera.

Learning to do this on the day will save you hours if not days of culling through images looking for shots to send as previews, to share to vendors and of course images you want to share on socials.

Pro tip! If you’re shooting duo cards, which I hope you are, then make sure you’re rating onto the same card you plan to load from later on. Just check that your camera is previewing images from the same card you load from and you’re all set.

I’m Jeff Chang and if you like this style of micro-learning, follow along and I’ll see you on the next one!

Life update! Finally getting back into routine aft Life update! Finally getting back into routine after a whirlwind of adventures over the last two months. It started with a quick but obvious trip to Disneyland, followed by a photography conference in Las Vegas which you can imagine was a ton of fun. When I got home, I (Jeff) had 6 days to get sorted before I headed to Berlin for Way Up North. After that, it was onto filming a web series with my friend Mike. We started our trip from the western most point in continental Europe, Cape Roca in Portugal. And traveled by train through, Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and finally Turkey all by train. I'm super excited about it, because our previous trip, where we went from the Arctic Circle to Africa is about to air on Youtube this week!

Okay, but back to reality right?! Cat and I have so much planned for The Apartment. We're working on a new website, new portraits of ourselves, we've got a styled photography shoot upcoming, our incredible summer of weddings and of course, tons of new educational content coming soon.

So.... we're a little busy, but we are also soooo excited to be tackling it all together. I hope you're here for it and we hope you like what you see!
Come edit today’s sneak peeks with me We always Come edit today’s sneak peeks with me

We always start by adding our colour preset and then fine tuning the exposure. With our preset we don’t typically have to make too many adjustments but if any, shadows, blacks, whites and highlights are normally tweaked.

With many indoor photos colour casting can be a real problem. The solution is typically through white balance and using the HSL panel. In this case, lowering the white balance to below the standard daylight 5200 and bringing down the overall saturation of the colour orange. Red bricks can also increase the look of Magenta so bring the tint slider down away from magenta to green can help.

Finally, using a linear or radial gradient to help draw the eye towards the subject is always a nice way to add mood and feeling.

And we’re done

The best way to batch edit in Lightroom in under a minute

Hey, we’re Jeff and Cat, a husband and wife photography team

Once our images are culled down, we reorder all our photos into coloured sections based on how the subject is being lit or the specific light characteristics of each image.

We call this, sort by colour.

In this example of our groom in the morning, I group all the photos starting with the harsher window light, then softer ambient indoor light, and finally direct sunlight outside by the beach.

Organizing our photos this way takes no more than 30 minutes but saves tons of time in editing, since you’re not going back and forth between images with different qualities of light.

Once we’ve edited one image, we can select all the photos in that range, and sync the settings. When it comes to editing each photo individually now, they only require minor tweaks, since the preset we synced was tailored specifically for those light characteristics.

Having a strong preset is super important as well, and for those asking we will be bringing our preset back out soon. Just make sure you’ve added yourself to our email list.

I’m Jeff Chang, and if you like this style of micro learning, swipe left to follow and I’ll see you on the next one.

Instructions: To sync photographs, select a batch of photographs and while on the active file, click: Ctrl + Shift + S (on a PC) or Command + Shift + S (on a Mac). This will bring up the Sync Dialogue. We like to use this method of sync so we can pick and choose what settings to use. For example, sometimes we like to sync the Mask settings and sometimes we don’t.

Tip!! You can use Copy and Paste independently to Sync. Meaning you could carry the settings of a black and white preset with your copy and paste, while also syncing photos.

It’s been a few weeks… four to be precise. I j It’s been a few weeks… four to be precise. I just wrapped a 3 week trip across Europe while also filming a web series with a friend. Something I’m really excited about sharing and can’t wait to for it to air late this summer.

I was also so honoured to be at Way Up North again, this time in Berlin. While I went as a guest rather than a speaker, a last minute hiccup, saw me presenting a keynote for the third time in a row ;) a real honour and one of my great pleasures of being an educator. I hope it made an impact and that I was able to be a meaningful part of the community.

But now looking towards Vancouver, all I can see are the eyes of my beautiful Cat. The anticipation of reuniting after a whole month apart continues to grow. Just two more sleeps and I’ll be home ❤️
