What the heck is Ai Servo? 👇

Ai servo is an auto-focus mode found on every Canon camera, called AF-C on Nikon cameras (C for continuous). The mode continuously focuses when it senses motion. This is perfect for when people are walking down the aisle at a wedding, capturing kids running around or people dancing the night away.

How it works:

This setting constantly adjusts and refocuses the lens whenever the distance between the camera and the subject changes right up until the moment you take the shot. Once enabled, you’ll want to keep the shutter button partially pressed as you track the subject with the camera. Since it’s continuously focusing, the subject will be instantly sharp the moment you press the shutter, no focusing time, no lag.

HOT TIP:

For walking down the aisle: Take the shot on the same beat as their step. It’s more flattering when legs are extended rather than in mid stride or an awkward in-between. In post, you can choose the perfect moment or expression and know it’ll be paired with great body positioning.

We often get asked if we've shot at certain venues before, I think it brings people peace of mind knowing we've worked a venue before. I'm not saying scouting isn't important or that there aren't advantages to having shot somewhere before but there's something creatively special about working somewhere new. A vibe, an energy that can only come from experiencing a venue for the first time. I guess what I'm saying is, we loved working here because it was new and creatively fulfilling ❤️ //

Finally home after 10 days in Sweden and boy do we have a lot to share. Until we get ourselves sorted, here's a little taste of what's to come! //

Dragged LIGHT look with a mirrorless camera 👇

1. Make sure your flash is off, so the camera doesn’t try to simulate the exposure. (Most cameras do this when a flash is attached and turned on)

2. Set your settings that are “must haves”. For dragged light photos you need a slow shutter, around 1/8s. If not shooting dragged light, then 1/100 - 1/200 is great. Next must have is aperture. I like to shoot around f/4-f/5.6 to make sure the subject is sharp.

3. Now that your shutter speed and aperture are set, take a look at the back of your camera and see what you see. If it’s too dark, increase the ISO until you see the string lights or the lights you wish to “drag”. If not dragging lights, then increase the ISO until you see the amount of ambient light you desire. If it’s still too bright out, (think outdoor wedding in the summer) but you want it darker and you’re already at ISO 100. Then you’ll have to increase your aperture to F/8 or more to darken the scene.

4. Now you can turn on your flash. I recommend starting in AUTO or E-TTL. If the flash is smart, it should be able to detect how far you’re focusing and only put out the amount of light necessary to light the dancers and not the whole room. If you’re not getting the desired effect, turn your flash to manual output. Start at the lowest setting and photograph a table or chair that’s 4-5 feet away and adjust the output until it seems bright enough.

5. To level up, try using your flash’s zoom setting. This feature changes how wide or how tight the beam of light that comes from your flash head is. If you zoom a lot, it will only illuminate a small part of your frame. This can allow your subjects to really pop!
